Shock as $18M blow-out found An expenditure blow-out of up to $18 million has forced “shell-shocked” councillors to put a hold on work to this year’s annual plan and it will likely mean even more increases to rates. The extra $18 million is carry over from capital projects that weren’t finished in the past financial year, but councillors didn’t know about it until it was presented by corporate services manager Mike Drummond at a full council meeting last Thursday. Typically, there is a carry over of around $9 million each year, but for it to be double

that amount is extremely significant. The news came months after work began on the council’s annual plan, which details where the council will spend its money and where that money will come from. Having to find room for an extra $18 million is a massive spanner in the works. Councillors decided to halt all work on the plan – which legally needs to be signed off by the end of June – until today, when council staff were to present more accurate figures around the blow-out. Richmond councillor Judene Edgar says

Andrew Board Editor

andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz she was shocked and “extremely disappointed”. “The councillors and the community need to have the utmost confidence in the financial management of the council, and this sort of error does not provide the surety that is needed. It is simply unacceptable.” The exact amount of the blow-out won’t

be known until today’s meeting, but some planned projects will likely be put on hold while the rest of the money will be added to the council’s massive debt burden, and targeted rates are also likely to increase. Mayor Richard Kempthorne says the announcement was a shock but there was no hint that the annual plan wouldn’t be finished on time. “It came as a surprise to everyone, I think. But the staff have seen this and made us aware of it earlier than usual to make sure there weren’t any surprises.”

Queen’s Service Medal ‘a surprise’

John Harwood has spent a lot of his life volunteering and helping the community – in fact he calculates that it’s about 3000 hours a year. But even so, the Brightwater man says receiving a Queen’s Service Medal for his work in the community is “quite a surprise”. The 78 year old ex-farmer was one of eight honours recipients in the region. Others included former Network Tasman chairman Ian Kearney, who was named Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit, and members of the New Zealand Order of Merit; bowler Jo Edwards, Nelson Marlborough District Health Board chairwoman

Jenny Black, Waihaere Mason, who was acknowledged for his services to Maori, and former search and rescue coordinator Sherp Tucker. John, born in Havelock, spent the majority of his working life as a farmer, and has been heavily involved with sheep shearing. He has since judged in competitions around the world. He has an extensive list of organisations he has volunteered for, but it was his work with the A&P Association, whom he has been with for 25 years as treasurer and property manager, and as national president of the

Hearing Association that John was recognised for. John is also a life member of the Nelson Hearing Association, Nelson A&P Association, Richmond Senior Citizens, and was given a Tasman District Council community award for outstanding community service in 2008. John was notified of his latest recognition about three months ago. “It came in the mail but, of course, it had that it was all confidential,” he says. “I just do these things because I do it for the community. Some of it I’ve been doing for 40 years. I just want to make it a better place for those who follow me. That’s what I’ve been trying to do with the Hearing Association and I guess with A&P in the same light too.” His involvement with A&P, which is now as property manager and treasurer, came about after he had spent time as the judge of the

shearing competition at the annual show. John has about “80 per cent hearing loss” and decided to join the Hearing Association to help out with their newsletter. He became a member and quickly found himself on the committee, before becoming regional president and then national president. “The current president said ‘my terms up, who’s going to takeover?’ I looked at the vicepresidents and they were all past presidents of the outfit. And that’s the way it worked.” John has four children, ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He says the family often asks him why he doesn’t spend his retirement “out and about”, instead of volunteering most of his time with various organisations, but they were proud of his efforts. He says he hasn’t had a chance to celebrate becoming a recipient of the Queen’s Service Medal, but planned to with his wife Nola in the coming week.

The second was another house fire, this time in Sovereign St in The Wood. A mother and her teenage daughter were taken to Nelson Hospital with smoke inhalation after the daughter had flicked a cigarette butt through the window, but it blew back onto the curtain and caught fire. They had working smoke alarms and Craig says they did the right thing by closing the door and calling 111, meaning nearly 90 per cent of the house could be saved. The third fire, which occurred

just last week, started at Waterblaster Solutions in Wakatu Estate, and affected a handful of other businesses in the same premises. The cause is yet to be determined. Craig says it was a concern that two of the three fires had been started by a cigarette. “It’s always a concern to us and people need to get their housekeeping in order. If they’re going to smoke, smoke outside.” Another concern was the amount of people calling the fire station to report a fire. “We’re not here all of the time so if they do see a fire they need to ring 111. That’s something people need to realise.”

It’s been a busy two weeks for the local fire service with three major fires, two of those involving cigarettes. Thankfully no one has been injured, but with winter officially underway and more people turning their heaters on and getting the fire cranking, the public need to be smart in order to prevent further emergencies. Senior station officer for Nelson, Craig Davies, says it’s been a busy time for an area that is generally “pretty fire safe”. “The level of fire safety education is pretty high in the Nelson area but we need to make sure we keep it high,” he says. “People certainly need to be pretty vigilant in winter time. Everyone is locked up inside with the fire going. We have a heater rule to make sure everything is a metre away, which is another good one to remember.” The first of the three major fires in the last two weeks occurred when a 73 year old Stoke man fell asleep with a lit cigarette in his hand. He managed to get out of the house with just

Local greenie designs ‘sustainable scooter’ Simon Bloomberg

Senior reporter Reporter

simon@waimeaweekly.co.nz Ross Mathews is a joiner and a greenie so it made sense that, when he decided to design and build a motorised scooter, it would be powered by electricity and made from wood. And the new eco-friendly design seems to be catching on, with Ross receiving a lot of interest in the custom-made scooters which he has just started producing in his workshop in Nelson. Ross has only made “just over a dozen” of the Spectrum Scooters and has already sold half of those, mostly to buyers in the North Island. “I used to ride motorbikes so I’ve always been interested in that sort of thing so I decided to design a scooter that fitted with a sustainable theme. I make the frame out of imported plywood that comes from sustainable forests and it’s powered by a lithium ion battery which last about two hours and recharges in four.” Ross says he buys the bike parts, such as wheels and brakes from Village Cycles, as well as the electrical components but makes the rest himself. It takes around three days to produce a scooter which with the battery which is carried in a small back pack weighs 19kg. Ross says the bikes have a top speed of just over 20 kilometres an hour and are classed as a two-wheeled recreational device so can be ridden either on the

Big turn out for chook show

Feathers, fowl and farmyard smells sum up the Nelson Poultry and Pigeon Association show at Hope hall. Last weekend saw an impressive display by exhibitors, including one of the association’s youngest members, Cameron Taylor with his wide variety of poultry. “I’ve done this probably since I was eight or so, I went to my first show in 2009. I’ve always been interested in chooks and birds,” says Cameron. “I got my first chook when I was young from my gran-

dad and started from there. He had a friend who did showing so he got me into that and I went to my first poultry show and did well, so I just carried on.” Cameron has 55 birds in total, including ducks, chooks, game fowl, game bantams and heavy breeds, most of which he had on show over the weekend. Club President Peter Lyall, says the purpose of the show is for people to get together and compare their breeds of poultry, and to find out if their breeds are up

to New Zealand show standards. “We had a good crowd of people coming through. It’s really good to see that we’re getting a lot of support from the public and exhibitors.” Peter came out on top, with his birds winning the best fancy bantam and the best game bird, which were also the two largest sections of the day. Next weekend eight Nelson poultry breeders will be heading up to the national show in Palmerston North with high expectations for their birds.

World champs coming to Richmond The quiz world championships are coming to Richmond. But don’t worry about having to qualify, everyone is invited to take part and earn the right to be called world champions. The six children of Mike Corkill have been helping organise what they are calling “World Championship Quiz Night” at the Waimea Old Boys clubrooms on June 20. Despite its name, the event isn’t actually a sanctioned world champ event, but Mike’s kids are hoping the title will encourage a huge turnout of the region’s top quiz minds to help raise the money for a new set of lungs for their dad. Mike needs to raise $100,000 for a new set of lungs, if he doesn’t, he is certain to die. The fundraiser has been dubbed “Dad’s new lungs” by his children. The family have already raised more than $12,000 and are hoping for a big turn-out this month for the quiz. Already, thousands of dollars worth of items have been donated for the auction, including $500 worth of landscaping products, artwork, a PS3 and $400 worth of travel vouchers. Tickets are available from the Richmond Mall information centre, Waimea Weekly office on Salisbury Rd, or at mikesnewlungs@gmail.com.

Bowling club recognises its newest life members

Chelcie-Mei Phillips, Bryn Rowland and Booklyn Phillips with the skateboard decks that will be used in the Board Art 2014 exhibition.

Artists to design skateboards The organiser of a youth skateboard art competition hopes it will attract new, young artists to participate. “It’s a fun thing to do. Rather than giving someone a canvas, we’re giving them a skateboard deck that they can do absolutely anything with,” says local painter and mother Donna Allfrey. “They don’t have to be a skater or an artist.” With the support of Creative New Zealand, Donna has been given 90

skateboard decks. Participants will first put their design on an entry form, with selected entries from Nelson, Tasman and Marlborough then given a skateboard deck to put their artwork on. “We’ve got the Refinery Artspace outer gallery to put their work on display in September in a proper exhibition.” To enter, visit Board Art 2014 on Facebook, or pick up an entry form from the Richmond Mall.

Q. How do we get help with our new baby?

Richmond Bowling Club patron Ken Smith says the club would have folded if it was wasn’t for the efforts of Barry and Colleen Kempton – a statement that truly highlights how integral they have been to the club over the past decade. Both Barry and Colleen were made life members of the club last month, and Ken believes it was a no brainer to thank them for their various achievements and services over the years, including their part in the shift to Club Waimea. Barry and Colleen both joined the club in 2001, after a recommendation from Colleen’s sister in Australia to start playing the sport. “We saw the advert in the paper. At the time it was a toss up between bowls and golf. But we decided to go along,” says Colleen. “We came down to the open day but we didn’t know they had a meeting first. We walked in and were introduced to everyone as the new members and that was it, end of story.” Colleen and Barry admit they are a competitive couple, but it was the social aspect that they

Helping her fellow teachers Phillip Rollo Reporter

editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz

During the past few months some early childhood teachers around the country have received gift baskets, vouchers, magazines subscriptions and other goodies to recognize hard work – and it’s all thanks to another early childhood teacher, Richmond’s Rebekah Cook. Rebekah has been an early childhood teacher since ’97 and says it’s an extremely important job, but one that can be emotionally and physically demanding. She is a firm believer that a happy teacher equals a happy child. So late last year, she start an initiative called Happy ECE Teachers, which sends gifts to deserving teachers to thank them for their contribution to early childhood education in their community. Rebekah, who works at Early Learning Centre in Richmond, is the sole funder of the initiative, and nominated herself for the Pride of New Zealand Awards in a bid to raise the profile of Happy ECE Teachers, and to send more “thank yous” around the country.

Jane and Bill Teasdale at the Founders Book Fair on Saturday. The fair has been going for 25 years straight and is expected to bring in $100,000-plus for the development of the park. The Founders Book Fair is open from 10am-4:30pm daily. Photo: Phillip Rollo.

Early childhood education teacher Rebekah Cook has been shortlisted for the Pride of New Zealand Awards. “Teachers can have the best resources, the best facilities, but if they’re not passionate and motivated then the best outcome for the children is not going to be achieved,” she says. “I saw the awards in an article in the Waimea Weekly and someone told me I should enter, so I thought ‘why not?’ I didn’t really expect to hear anything so I was quite excited when I heard I was shortlisted for the Community Spirit Award.” Rebekah says early childhood education is an industry she’s very happy to be in. “I just love seeing the children growing, developing and learning new

skills every day. I just want to make a difference in families’ lives.” But it was an interest in the wellbeing of teachers and its link with the well-being of children and families that started Happy ECE Teachers. “I was trying to find a tangible way I could recognise the hard work teachers do. It’s just my way of making a difference and it’s been really well received. I’ve had nothing but positive feedback about it.” All registered early childhood teachers can enter on the Happy ECE Teachers’ website; happyeceteachers.weebly.com/ for their chance to win a prize.

Women celebrate 50 years with RSA It’s been 50 years since the women’s section of the Richmond RSA was founded. The services the RSA provide to returned servicemen and their families has always been an important part of any community and on May 27 they marked their 50 years with a celebratory lunch at Club Waimea. The RSA women’s section is a New Zealand wide organisation set up to support the men who went to fight and their families who were left behind. The Richmond women’s section is supported by around 50 members including two of the founding members, Norma Best and Laura

Trigger, who were both present at the lunch. The Richmond section was also joined by other RSA women’s groups from around the area including Marlborough, Motueka and Nelson, as well as representatives from the Men’s RSA. Richmond president Jan Blackmore said the day was a great celebration of such an important milestone shared by so many people, including numerous life members and long service members. The club meets regularly once a month for social activities, receives guest speakers and visits other clubs, along with their involvement in Poppy day and Anzac Day.

Your Voice

‘Heroes’ nominated for award: Awesome guys! Really proud of you. So very brave of you guys. Well deserved. Jae Walter. Brave indeed - Kyle, you’re an inspiration. Caron Proctor.

Yay-yah! Top job lads. Well deserved, much praise. Sharon May Patterson. Proud of you, Kyle. Much respect. Laurence Max. They deserve it. you guys are heroes to the people of Nelson, and will never be forgotten by the family for doing what you did. Felicity Watson. Demand too much for cat trust: People seem to find it easier to put them down, shoot them or leave them to fend for themselves. Makes me sad in saying this - the SPCA wouldn’t help me with a neighbour’s cat that was stuck in a tall palm like tree on my family’s property, as it wasn’t my cat therefore not my problem. We ended up calling the fire department who were more than happy to help. I also have another sad story about the SPCA but won’t put it up here. Marie Harrison. People need to wake up! It frustrates me seeing the same people trying to give away kittens on the garage sale sites on Facebook. De-sex your pets. Stop getting free kittens where you will just let them breed instead of desexing. Go to the SPCA and get one that is desexed, wormed and micro-chipped. No wonder we have a crazy man in Parliament saying we need to register cats or start killing strays that

wander into our yard. And instead of giving up your pet when you move, find a house that will allow you to have a pet. Pets are meant to be part of the family. Pets are meant to be for life! You don’t give them up just because your living situation changes. Julia Lines.

It is not actually the SPCA’s job to take in your animal that you decide you don’t want anymore, they’re there to prevent and protect animals from cruelty. Some SPCAs around the country don’t take in any animals from owners at all, they only take strays. If your situation changes, it’s your responsibility to re home your animal, the SPCA is an absolute last resort. People act like it’s the SPCA’s responsibility to take their animal. It’s not. If they agree to take your pet they’re doing you a favour, one they have no obligation to do. It’s not hard to do the right thing and advertise your animal on Trade Me or elsewhere and find it a good home. Jazmin Torrance. If you don’t plan to keep an animal, don’t damned well get one. And yes, the SPCA and other welfare organisations are not there for these people to simply dump animals to after they get sick of them! Get your females speyed and the boys neutered. If you can’t afford it, don’t get them unless you’re prepared to do right by them. It infuriates me to know that Amanda lee has had to contend with such abysmal attitudes from halfwitted people and therefore has had to stop her rescue operation thanks to the lack of common sense and common decency of a few. I for one wish Amanda all the best. What an absolutely top lady for what you have done for the felines. Takes someone very special indeed to undertake such a huge responsibility. I have immense respect. Janelle Thorpe.

Rowan Dron is delighted to be your local SmartVent System installer and believes this is the best home ventilation system around. If you asked an expert electrician, rather than the next door-to-door salesperson that comes knocking, or a fast talking telemarketer, chances are that they’d recommend SmartVent too. Recent independent research revealed that 8 out of 10 electricians recommend SmartVent as the home ventilation solution to choose A home ventilation system from SmartVent quietly ventilates your home with fresher, drier air; removing condensation and moisture and a creating healthier, more comfortable living environment. SmartVent Rids Your Home of Condensation. Crying windows, wet sills, damp walls! These are all signs of too much moisture in the home. Damp conditions lead to mould and mildew. It damages your paint and wallpaper, it rots your walls and furniture, it harms your curtains, furnishings and clothes. Mould and mildew lead to airborne allergens and aggravates respiratory illnesses like asthma. So don’t put up with crying windows and damp walls – it’s costing you money, takes time to clean up and could be dramatically affecting your family’s health. Breathe Fresh Clean Air by reducing air-

borne toxins from tobacco smoke, household cleaners, and formaldehyde from furniture, carpet and building materials. SmartVent also reduces pollutants such as dust and dust mites, pet dander and pollen, all of which can trigger asthma, allergies and other respiratory condition. SmartVent Synergy is a True Heat Recovery system capable of extracting stale, moistureladen air from inside your home and bringing in fresher, drier air simultaneously. Synergy is a completely balanced system, that recovers and re- uses up to 90% of the heat from the warm air extracted from within your home. An extremely energy efficient way to re-use heat you have already generated and paid for from your heat pump, log fire or other heat source. SmartVent is cheaper than other ventilation systems, is of higher quality and they are a local NZ company that uses NZ made gear. It’s future proofed so you can upgrade at any time, it’s easy to operate and has whisper quiet running as well as a five year guarantee. To discover exactly how SmartVent can keep your home warmer, drier and healthier check out their website www.smartvent. co.nz or arrange for Rowan to call and provide a free home assessment. Richmond artist gets her big break Alice Reade has hit the ground running with her first art exhibition at just sixteen. The Annual Community Art Awards, sponsored by Richmond business Impressions, is in its eighth year and has recently been extended from the Nelson and Marlborough region to the whole of the country. It has also seen some additional categories including the Student Art Awards, sponsored by the Refinery Gallery, which allows students studying for any arts related degree or qualification to enter their works, in a bid to win a fully funded solo exhibition at the Refinery Gallery. Nelson College for Girls student, Alice Reade, entered two pieces that went up against a number of other entries in-

cluding established artists, one being in their final year of a Masters degree. Her pencil composition, Dear Deer, earned her the opportunity to display eight

stunning works of art in the gallery and it has become an incredibly successful exhibit, says Kahurangi Trust Manager Roger Thorn. “It means a lot,” says Alice. “It’s an amazing opportunity because if I hadn’t won the award and this [exhibit] it would be hard approaching a gallery, not having a history. This award will make it easier to go and do other things, but having people looking at it is amazing and all the feedback I’m getting is really good.” Along with her exhibit, Alice also received mentoring from practicing artist Lee Woodman who helped her with hanging and composing her artworks. Alice’s exhibition has been extended until June 7 so take the time to appreciate one of Nelson’s emerging young artists.

Because it is a very special and sacred place in terms of its history, geography, and religious culture and personalities. I’m referring to an area in central Turkey called Cappadocia. Geographically it is out of this world. An elevated ancient volcanic landscape of soft ash and hard lava shaped into amazing landforms eg ‘fairy chimneys’. This stunning landscape was utilised in incredibly creative ways by the local inhabitants, many of whom were Christian, to adapt to past trying circumstances, namely persecution by the Romans. The soft volcanic ash enabled these deeply spiritual people to build underground villages and churches to protect them from danger and they were both beautiful and in-

genious to behold, with colourful Biblical motifs and frescoes, as well as ‘dark places’ in which to entrap their pursuers. This same area was also the home of Mevlana Rumi, a 12th century Islamic mystic and writer who was a founding father of the Sufi Sect. Rumi’s contribution to religious practice and belief is significant. His seven principles he arrived at in union with God are particularly relevant for todays divided world: 1) In generosity and helping others, be like a river. 2) In compassion and grace, be like the sun 3) In concealing others faults, be like the night 4) In anger and fury, be like the dead. 5) In modesty and humility, be like the earth 6) In tolerance, be like the sea 7) Either exist as you are or be as you look. Awesome thoughts from an awesome person who came from an awesome place on God’s earth.

By Paul Tregurtha, Waimea Methodist. Human language is continually evolving isn’t it: new words and phrases are being added all the time; others are changing their meaning or usage. AWESOME is one such word. It’s used a lot these days to describe people, performances, places. Not so in the past. In the Bible ‘awesome’ was used to describe God, for God was to be revered: God was sacred, mysterious, all powerful, majestic. God was to be held in awe, some would say even fear, because of these attributes. I suggest when we use the word ‘awesome’ today we don’t give it the same reverential meaning as in the past. Having said all that it is still a word I would use to describe an area I visited recently. Why?

COMPANY The Bigger, Stronger and Better in 2014 After 18 years The Car Company is still on top. Despite a constantly shifting market, they remain a dominant force within the motor vehicle industry and are planning on maintaining this position with innovative thinking and a proactive attitude towards business decisions. In the last 12 months The Car Company has seen several changes, including the relocation of their head office from Vanguard St to their Rutherford St property. Rutherford Street now incorporates three premises, the commercial and recreational centre, their head office and the car dealership. Managing Director Shane Drummond took the opportunity to purchase the Rutherford St property, which has not

only expanded the company to two dealerships but gives him the chance to run the business from companyowned land. While Vanguard St is no longer head of operations, its new title as The Car Company Clearance Centre gives people a more cost-effective option when buying a car. Specialising in trade-in vehicles and a range of cheaper vehicles, they now stock around 35 cars that are on display and readily-available for viewing. The Car Company has also developed and invested in expanding their Tahunanui dealership. New offices have been erected along with the addition of a new garage and a larger area for stock. COMPANY The Bigger, Stronger and Better in 2014 Last month Shane Drummond, accompanied by Richmond manager Ben Brownie, returned from a buying trip in Japan. The trip not only gave Ben experience in buying stock but provided The Car Company with an additional 95 cars in preparation for their birthday sale, which began on Friday. Every car in every dealership will be on sale, which is “pretty powerful” says Shane, considering the size of their stock goes well over 400 vehicles. Shane himself is in constant contact with a huge network of suppliers locally, nationally and internationally, and because of this they have the means to stock so many cars, buy a lot more and, because of their range, they sell more. This makes them a stronger and more effective car dealer than many other outlets. The breadth of their contacts, and the fact they are continually buying cars around the country, means they can always locate a specific vehicle for their clients. The Car Company celebrated more success when they were named SsangYong’s dealership of the year for 2013. “That’s pretty exciting for us,” says Shane. “For a little dealership in Nelson to be at the premium of a distributor.” The Car Company are proud to be the sole distributor for the top of the South Island for the Korean manufacturer SsangYong, and stock a comprehensive range of new and used vehicles. SsangYong has also taken on the LDV van distributorship, making

The Car Company an LDV franchisee, which continues to be a successful line of vehicles. Community support has always been a vital part of The Car Company and this year a charity drive in association with More FM will gift a generous 10,000 dollars to a worthy community cause. “We are obviously a massively community-orientated company and we like to keep the support that we do local,” says Shane. “We support lots of community things like basketball, cricket, rugby, women’s refuge and the list goes on. I’m one strong believer that you earn your money locally and spend your money locally.” The Car Company is itself strongly supported by a loyal staff: several of the 22 staff having been with Shane for well over 10 years. “That’s very rare in the car business, for people in such volumes to be staying with one company. They’ve realised we look after our staff and we’ve got an extremely great bunch of staff.” They are a great asset to the company because service is paramount and The Car Company pride itself on employing knowledgeable, customer-focused and dedicated people, who strive to maintain the best standard and reputation for the company. The Car Company also offers their clients extra options with their own finance and insurance company, so you don’t have to go anywhere else to complete your car buying process.

The team at the Money Company offer a unique scenario, with competitive rates and comprehensive solutions to suit customers’ individual needs. “We don’t take investments and put people’s money at risk, all we do is loan it out and it’s local and extremely competitive, just the same way that we sell cars.” The future of The Car Company will be shaped by their commitment to “keep on keeping on”. “My huge philosophies are that we back ourselves, that we don’t except failure and we take risks,” says Shane. “We’re proactive and extremely innovative. We don’t just look locally at what we’re doing. By going to Japan we are updating the market and researching what’s happening because the car market is continually changing with government regulations and rules. We have to react to those.” The Car Company’s expansion is aided by other elements including their website, TradeMe and other forms of social media. By moving with the times and maintaining a proactive approach to their business, The Car Company aims to provide clients with the best service and deals available in the industry. Clean sweep for Greenacres golfers It was three Greenacres golfers who dominated the Taylor Timbers Waimea Golf Championship on their own course, with Tom Dasler, Henry Ludbrook and Natalee Read the big winners over the weekend. Natalee, representing Greenacres, was named ladies champion, winning by four shots to card a two-round 164. She was also the overall net winner, her handicap bringing her score down to 142 over the 36-hole event.

Phillip Rollo Reporter

editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz In the men’s section, Tom, also of Greenacres, won the championship with a score of 145 over two rounds. He won in a threehole playoff with Queenstown’s Dong Young Kim. Henry tallied 150 over two rounds, but his

-10 handicap brought his score down to 140, giving him the overall net title. While the championship titles were the most prestigious, there were bigger prizes for the net winners, enabling competitors of all skill levels to be in with a chance. The tournament was robbed of some the region’s top players, with Ryan Chisnall and Blair Riordan currently competing at the Mexico Amateur Stroke Play Championship, and women’s number one Katrina

Manaena out injured. However, tournament director Sue Taylor says it was another splendid weekend for the tournament, which has been running annually since the 1940s. “It was a fantastic weekend. We had 90 entries, with most of those coming from around the region,” she says. “We were so lucky with beautiful weather and the course was amazing. It was a very successful tournament and everyone really enjoyed it.”

Fresh Choice Richmond Athletic will face Mainland Premier League side Coastal Spirit at home in the next round of the ASB Chatham Cup, after beating Nelson College 2-0 on Monday. It’s a favourable draw for the young Richmond side, who have avoided a road trip to Christchurch. They will now play the same team that knocked them out at this same stage in 2011. The game will be played on either June 14 or 15. Richmond coach Marc Evans has said all along that the Chatham Cup, a nationwide knockout competition, was just a bonus, but they now find themselves as the last remaining Nelson side in the third round. “It’s great to get a home game. It’s good for the coffers, hopefully we can get a good crowd in and get the bar going. It’s much better than travelling,” he says. “It’s great for the club that we’ve got a home draw.” He says the team would look forward to testing themselves against a Mainland Premier League side. “We’re playing some decent football. We’ve got a good team and we’ll give it our best go. This is all new for them and they’ve all got dreams of playing Mainland, so this will be a bit of a reality check.”

appleby volunteer rural fire force

25th Anniversary

The Appleby Volunteer Rural Fire Force will be showing off their newly renovated headquarters and looking back at their history when they hold an open day at their station on the Appleby Highway this Saturday to celebrate their 25th anniversary. Appleby’s controller Paul Eggers says the open day will be held from 3pm to 5pm and will feature displays of the force’s history including newspaper articles and photographs and slides of some of the major fires they have attended. The force’s volunteers will be available to show visitors around the station which they have just finished renovating for the anniversary celebrations. Principal Rural Fire Officer for the Waimea Rural Fire District, Ian Reade says Appleby has been a key component of the district’s rural fire fighting network for the last 25 years. He says volunteer fire forces like Appleby give up countless hours of their own time to protect the community and they should be proud of their achievements. Ian says the anniversary will be an extra special milestone for Appleby’s founding members

Ted Ford and John Russ and two of the force’s five female volunteers, Bella and Grace Clark, who have been members for over 20 years. Paul has been a member for 18 years after spending six years with the Upper Moutere brigade while Tom Jackman was a volunteer with the Picton and Richmond brigades before joining Appleby. “They have some people there who have been volunteers for a long time and they put in a tremendous effort,” Ian says. “Appleby started off just fighting vegetation fires but they have developed into a significant emergency response force - they are a credit to their community.” Paul says they have been fortunate to have such dedicated volunteers as well as good support from the Waimea Rural Fire Authority and Tasman District Council which help fund their operation. The Appleby community has also played a big role in supporting the force and he says they couldn’t continue operating without their help. “We get funding for our truck and power and most of our equipment but we still need to

Things will be hotting up for Greenacres golfer Ryan Chisnall this week when he travels to Mexico for his first international tournament outside Australasia. Ryan and Takaka’s Blair Riordan have been selected to represent New Zealand at the Mexican Amateur Championships starting at the Yucatan Country Club near Merida on June 5. Top amateurs from around the world have been invited to the championships which will also involve a two-player international teams’ competition. Ryan’s selection for the 72-hole stroke play tournament comes after he was named in the New Zealand Golf Academy just last week. The 19 year-old is looking forward to his latest, and possibly biggest, challenge yet and says the key to success will be adapting to the conditions “It’s going to be a big challenge coming out of a Nelson winter to play in the heat on a hard and fast course but I’ve played a lot in Australia and I prefer those conditions,” Ryan says. It will also be a steep learning

I had a look at it on the internet but it was all in Spanish so that wasn’t much help so that means practise day is going to be vital. “My short game will also need to be sharp. Property insights What’s important when preparing your home for sale? There are so many important things that you should do to have your home looking the best ever, but one thing that is often overlooked is the local authority property file. Have you done any, or inherited any, un-permitted work? Is your fire place compliant, has your house been built as per the plans? Is there anything recorded on your file that requires an explanation and how will this impact on your price or the ability to sell your property? Your agent should check the property file before your property appraisal is completed. Any major issues may be reflected in the price.

Lydia Heyward Licensed Real Estate Agent (REAA 2008)

You can check your own file at council, the staff are very helpful, just pop into the council and ask for a general property enquiry report. Waimea Old Boys Rugby

WOB on track for top four Star & Garter Waimea Old Boys should be able to confirm its place in the top four this weekend against bottom place Stoke, but they’ll only need to look back to the first round to see how much of a potential banana skin this clash could be. Waimea Old Boys relied on a last minute try and a sideline conversion to beat Stoke, who have failed to record a win against any team in the Car Company division one competition and will host Waimea on their club day, making this Saturday’s match even more crucial. “We had to win on the weekend and we’re going to have to win again this weekend, there’s no two-ways about it,” co-coach Mark Milne says, ahead of their final Car Company division one round robin match. With Wanderers and Marist drawing 13-13, Waimea Old Boys have moved into second place on 25 points following Saturday’s 54-6 win over Kahurangi. However, that could be just temporarily, as Marist have two games in hand. Kahurangi, in fifth place on 16 points and a game in hand, will need a resurgence in the final few rounds to make their way into the top four. And in the Bayleys Tasman Trophy, the title looks almost certain to go to Waitohi, who beat Nelson 33-15 in Picton to continue their unbeaten run. The loss was Nelson’s second of the Tasman Trophy campaign, while the next best hope, Wanderers, were left frustrated by a tough Marist side.

Footballer thriving in the US

Use MTA Good Guys

Phillip Rollo Reporter

editorial@waimeaweekly.co.nz

It’d be hard to convince Erik Panzer that anywhere other than the United States is the perfect pathway for a top athlete and someone wanting a top education. When it comes to increasing his football skills on the pitch, and expanding his knowledge off it, Erik believes it’s USA all the way. The 20 year-old is back in Nelson for a month after completing his second year at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, Connecticut, where he studies psychology and plays centreback for their soccer team, the Bobcats. He will be one of three guest speakers at Sport Tasman’s US College Sports Scholarship Information Evening this Friday, where students, parents and coaches can learn more about life as an athlete in the American college system. Erik, who will be joined by middle distance runners Craig Lautenslager and Josie Wilcox on Friday, had achieved nearly everything he could as a teenager in New Zealand football. He was a regular for Nelson Suburbs in the Mainland Premier League, led Canterbury United to the ASB Youth League title, and made his ASB Premiership debut for Canterbury United. But the US had always appealed to him as a place where he could extend his football career and get an education at

Injuries happen and even if you go pro at the age of 18 you can always get cut. So it was a very appealing option, the fact I had a US passport helped too,” the former Garin College student says. After moving conferences, Quinnipiac had their best season ever in 2013/14, reaching the first round of the NCAA Championship. Erik was gifted an NCAA ring to remember the team’s efforts, but despite losing to tenth-ranked University of Connecticut, it was a moment he’s unlikely to forget. “It was a place no one in the school had ever gone; no one in the programme had ever gone. They sent up five busloads of supporters from school, we had a good 500 fans and there were 3500 people in the crowd,” he says, describing the biggest

Black Caps are coming back to Saxton Oval

It’s confirmed, the Black Caps are returning to Nelson, this time to take on Sri Lanka, as they build up to the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup. The one-day international will be the fourth in a five game series and is scheduled to be held at Saxton Oval on Tuesday, January 20. Sri Lanka are ranked fourth in the ODI world rankings and boast super stars Lasith Malinga, Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene, making it the top team to ever play an international game in Nelson. The Black Caps beat West Indies in a rain affected match earlier this year, the first time a one-day international had been held in Nelson. The match was a huge success, with a sell-out crowd turning up to see their cricketing heroes in action. As well as the ODI between New Zealand and Sri Lanka, Nelson will host three ICC Cricket World Cup games next year, one featuring heavyweights, the West Indies against Ireland and the others featuring Zimbabwe, Bangladesh and two other nations.

football game of his young career. Erik says his Bobcats team played to their game plan perfectly but still couldn’t overturn their much-fancied opponents, losing 2-1. “We kept on fighting but we just couldn’t break it. That’s where the journey ended but it was our first time ever going into the national championship draw. For the school, it was huge. It was a moment that all students live for.” Now back in Nelson for a few more weeks, where he has played an instrumental part in Nelson Suburbs’ resurgence, Erik put his hand up to speak with young athletes about his US scholarship and how they can follow a similar path. “People need help sometimes, they don’t know the process. I just felt there was an opportunity to inform others that have the potential and there are so many opportunities out there.”
